40 Lessons I Learned Before Turning 40: Lesson 05

Lesson 05: Not Everything Needs to Be Said

When I was younger, I thought being honest meant saying exactly what was on my mind. I didn't believe in sugarcoating my words or beating around the bush. As long as I was being honest, there was nothing wrong with speaking my mind. To me, communication was about speaking my truth, standing up for what I believed in, and never leaving things unsaid. But as I grew older, I learned that words mean so much more than that. Not every thought needs to be spoken. Not every argument needs to be won. The words I said today might eventually be forgotten by me. But the person who heard them? They might carry the feelings those words left behind for a long time. Maybe even forever.

Being outspoken isn't always a virtue, and being silent isn't always a weakness.. Because words, once spoken, cannot be taken back. We may move on from what we said, but we may never know how long someone else has to live with how we made them feel.

To everyone I have ever hurt with my words, I'm truly sorry. I never intended to hurt anyone, but I know that good intentions don't erase the pain our words can cause. I used to be reckless with my words. Looking back, I have my regrets. There are things I wish I had never said, moments I wish I could revisit, and words I wish I could take back..

Hearts are fragile things. We may never truly know the battles someone is fighting, the insecurities they carry, or the wounds they are quietly trying to heal. Sometimes, a few careless words can hurt more than we realize. We cannot always control how others feel, and we cannot live our lives afraid of saying the wrong thing. But we can choose to be more mindful, more gentle, and more compassionate with our words.

We never know how much someone is already carrying in their heart.
